Flying Robirds Increase Safety at Airports

Flying Robirds Increase Safety at Airports Flying Robirds Increase Safety at Airports Collisions between birds and airplanes have always been a major concern at airports around the world. The cost of bird control is estimated in billions of dollars, and dispersal methods include physical barriers, netting, and mobile patrols equipped with acoustic, visual, and physical scaring devices. The problem with these methods, however, is that birds quickly adapt and simply fly around or through them.But now a company in the Netherlands, Clear Flight Solutions, has developed a life-like robotic falcon/drone that is highly effective at scaring away birds from airports. The company recently received about $2 million from Cottonwood Euro Technology Fund to expand its work, allowing it to become a weltweit leader in bird management.Realistic Flight PatternsCalled Robird, the robotic falcon mimics the flight of a real peregrine falcon. The flying motion is so realistic that birds immediately believ e the falcon is real and leave the area. Climbing hundreds of feet and reaching speeds of 50 miles per hur, the remote-controlled falcon swoops, glides, and flaps it wings.With Robird, chasing off the flocks of pest birds becomes fully controllable. Image Clear Flight SolutionsThe robotic raptor owes its light weight (1.6 pounds) to 3D printed bodies of nylon composite with glass fiber, and to a lithium polymer battery, writes Erica R. Hendry. Perhaps the greatest engineering feat is getting lift and propulsion solely from flapping, a complex motion that has long puzzled scientists including, notably, Leonardo da Vinci.Each foam wing flexes to different degrees across its length and attaches to a double hinge at its base. Although we are not 100 percent accurate in the flight movement, achieving well-controlled flapping wing flight with the same size and same weight of the actual bird, with comparable flight performance, is absolutely unique, says Nico Nijenhuis, co-founder and CEO of Clear Flight Solutions. We keep improving the movement and control to become more and more like the real thing.Deployment of the Robird also requires a pilot and an observer, who watches the other air traffic. If you operate at an airport, there are a lot of protocols that you have to follow, adds Nijenhuis. Youre working in a high-risk area and there are all kinds of things that you need to check. We use the latest technologies, but the human aspect also remains crucial.High-Flying profilTests show that Robird can reduce pest bird populations by up to 75 percent over time. This is generating interest from all over the world. Right now we are involved with projects in seven countries, says Nijenhuis. Well be expanding that in the upcoming years. Exciting work Other potential applications are in the fields of animal observation and protection, biological research, and the safety and security sectors.As a result, Clear Flight Solutions continues to grow and now employs 15 people, i ncluding a retired 747 captain. The company is intent on eventually taking the human element out of the loop, says Nijenhuis. In the future, the birds will operate as autonomously as possible, detecting and chasing birds by themselves.Achieving this will require the addition of more sensors and other technologies to the birds. For example, say the Robird is flying at 80 km/h in one direction and a helicopter is coming at 180 km/h from the other direction. What combination of sensors is needed to detect that helicopter, make a decision on what to do to avoid a collision, and then actually execute that action? These are the types of problems were facing, says Nijenhuis. Right now there is no combination of technologies that can be integrated into a bird that can weigh only a maximum of 750 grams, which is light enough, powerful enough, and does not consume too much energy to actually fulfill this task.The company is also putting its general knowledge about drones and nature to good us e in other projects. For example, says Nijenhuis, weve developed a multicopter drone that can automatically find bird nests, fawns, and other animals in agricultural fields to save them from agricultural machines, a beautiful example of the combination of our knowledge and experience.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussion In the future, the birds will operate as autonomously as possible, detecting and chasing birds by themselves.Nico Nijenhuis, CEO, Clear Flight Solutions

This means that your resume has to be outstanding in order to stand out from the crowd. When using the spray and pray tactic, resumes usually dont hold the specified requirements or keywords, causing them to get turned down immediately. Study The motherhood penalty exists even if youre not a mother yet

Study The motherhood penalty exists even if youre not a mother yetStudy The motherhood penalty exists even if youre not a mother yetMarried, childless women face their own type of motherhood penalty, a new, large-scale study found. The motherhood penalty refers to women finding that becoming working mothers often leads to decreased pay (sometimes from working fewer hours), being promoted less, and other disadvantages in the workplace.Newresearch,published this month by the IZA Institute of Labor Economics based in Bonn, Germany, shows that married women without children are often less attractive job candidates when up against women with older children at least for part-time work. Why? Because of the risk that they may get pregnant and have children, foisting unwanted costs and loss of productivity onto an employer.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraResearchers send out 9,000 job a pplications for fictional candidates, all aged 30, to part-time jobs across Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.The womens characteristics were varied across applications. Their fictional womens stats were listed as single and childless, married and childless, married with young children, and married with older children. (This information is standard to include on resumes in the above countries.) Resumes from men were also sent out.Researchers found that for part-time jobs, women with older children received a higher response rate than other groups of women such as women with young children and married women without children.Parents of older children appear to be ideal candidates to employers, researchers concluded, due to the fact that they were unlikely to become pregnant again and because their childcare schedule was more predictable, requiring fewer absences.Married women with two older children were 13% more likely to receive a callback than a married childless woman.The single lifeWhen childless married women went up against childless single women, the childless married women had a 4-6% lower callback rate.Women without children applying for a part-time job may be perceived as planning to become mothers soon especially if they are married, researchers wrote.These advantages and disadvantages disappeared for full-time job applications, partly due to cultural reasons in the German-speaking countries included, part-time work is considered to be work for women juggling family obligations. In applying for full-time work, it is assumed mothers applying for full-time work have childcare arrangements firmly in place and possibly that women planning on having children might not be applying for full-time work.Regardless, the discrimination against married childless women found in the research is remarkable because it shows that women can be faulted in the workplace not just for being a mother, but for looking like you might someday be one.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

10 negotiation tips every woman needs in her arsenal

10 negotiation tips every woman needs in her arsenal10 negotiation tips every woman needs in her arsenalWe have all seen the statistics by now. Women are getting paid less than male counterparts while often putting in longer hours. In addition to this, women are typically hired based on past performance while men are hired based on their future potential, as I learned from the CEO of The Female Quotient and founder of The Girls Lounge, Shelley Zalis. She addressed this at the fifth annual Deal With It, a womens conference hosted by the Motion Picture Television Fund.The event is designed to give women practical advice and counsel in career, estate planning, finance, health and wellness and more. One thing that was covered that really stood out to me was how negotiation, in any field or context, is something women just dont learn enough about. If we are going to have equality in the workplace and beyond, negotiation skills are extremely important.Know who you are dealing withWhether it is a Fortune 500 executive or the car dealership down the block, knowing who you are dealing with is the first step toward negotiation success. Understanding their background and familiarizing yourself with the logistics of their rank and career can help you maneuver a negotiation. Doing your research on who you are negotiating with can make or break a deal, as I have seen time and again with my own clients and experiences.Speak upAs women, many of us are hard on ourselves and are afraid to negotiate firmly. My friend Bryn Freedman, one of the leading speaker coaches at TED, shared with me recently, Being authentic and standing up for ourselves starts by quieting our innerhalb critic. This critic is in all of us but its not your true self no matter how much it feels that way. Your true inner voice is kind, it advocates for you and, without being strident, knows that you deserve to reach your goals. The more you speak to yourself with love, the louder and clearer your authentic vo ice becomes.Be fairBefore demanding an unrealistic or perhaps undeserved ask in a negotiation, be sure to do your research. Look into what others with your level of expertise are asking for or making. Also, Never pull the gender card when discussing qualifications, or really in any environment, stated Beverly Hills Chief of Police Sandra Spagnoli at the conference. Seeking equality is the heart of feminism, and using gender as a reason for a raise doesnt aid anyone in both a negotiation situation and the greater movement for equality.Leave emotion at the doorAs with purchasing a car or home, dont show even a glimmer of anger, annoyance, excitement or anything other than calm professionalism. Your emotions and microexpressions are likely being analyzed and assessed during every moment of the negotiation.PracticeHire a coach, talk in the mirror, or get a friend or colleague to run through scenarios and sample questions that could come up in your negotiation - any sort of preparation is beneficial for a successful negotiation. As my friend and successful entrepreneur, Ashley Sumner shared in my interview with her, Dont let the first time you ask for what you want, be said to the person you need it from the most. Its important to think it through and practice saying it, out loud, to a trusted friend.Make a listIts a mistake going into negotiations without writing down exactly what your goals are ahead of time and knowing exactly what you will accept and not accept.Dont wait for a boss to say, Here are your benefits. Ask for what you want instead. You are making yourself more powerful by writing down a proposal for your requirements and never being too afraid to bring it to the table.Get everything in writingIn any negotiation, you can be promised the moon but unless you get it in writing you are not guaranteed a thing This is something I learned the hard way over the years. Its worth it to push for paperwork to back up everything that is said.Use silencePut your offer on the table and then stay silent. Human nature will tempt you into filling the quiet, but dont Spagnoli insisted to use your silence as a benefit.Act for what you wantTalk, think and dress for what you want - not what you have. You dont need to spend an enormous amount on designer clothes. It is possible to look the part whatever that might be for your profession and come across very polished on a reasonable budget.Be willing to walk awayKnow it is okay to walk away if they truly want you, they will always come back. Despite what it may feel like at the time, there is always another opportunity, and if the offer was not ideal, it is all right to leave the situation empty-handed. Dont allow this setback to destroy your confidence, productivity or happiness.This article first appeared on BusinessCollective.

For many people, a resume is off-putting as they dont think they have any relevant experience nor do they understand how to approach it. One of the hardest steps to overcome with your resume is getting started, so be aya to check out how to overcome that struggle below. Why do I need one?Your resume is your conversation starter with any future employer. No resume in the world will be able to speak for you as well as you could yourself, but the aim is to make your resume as comprehensive and concise as possible so the recruiter (the people that hire employees) will want to hear mora and offer an interview. There are many ways that people find employment. However, if your personal network doesnt give rise to finding a job, and you dont have any friends that have jobs vacant, your resume is the first step. Think of it as the foundation from which you can build the empire of your career. Who looks at my resume?There are two main review systems used by employers. These are recruiter reviews and automated reviews (ATS). In some instances, an organisation may run your resume through an automated system that scans for keywords and key details. After that initial screening, a recruiter will further analyse the details on your resume. As it is possible that your resume will pass through an automated service, it is important to use readable fonts and a format that makes sense. Overcoming resume-writing-block You may be aware that there are different types of resumes chronological order resume, functional resume, rev erse-chronological resume and so on. While ansicht resume types do exist, they arent as necessary as you may have once believed.In reality, there are few sections that are required in a resume no matter what position youre going for. Some jobs have restrictions on the formatting, details and fonts you may use (for example, an Academic Resume), but for the fruchtwein part, you can start with a blank slate and add what you feel is necessary. The key to building your resume is thinking about three things What is the job Im applying for?What is required of me in that role?How do I convey that I fulfil those requirements?If you keep those three things in mind, you wont get overwhelmed by what you think should be happening in your resume instead, youll be excited to start working and showing your talents.Other tips you can use to overcome writers block when it comes to your resume are Speak to your family on how they have written their resumes and what they think might belong on yoursSit down and think about moments you are most proud of Talk to someone who has worked with you on some project or volunteeringBreaking down your first resume While there is no one-size-fits-all way to create a resume, its helpful to binnenlandsee some examples of sections you can include. Some things are needed on all resumes no matter what theyre being used for. Well focus on those for now.1. NameThe first thing the recruiter should see is your name and who you are below it. Theyre not going to remember who turned in the resume at the desk or submitted it online. Without your name on your resume, theres nothing to distinguish your resume from another persons. Its reminding the recruiter who you are at a glance.2. Contact Details Always include contact details on a resume. This can include your email, phone number, website and/or LinkedIn. It is necessary to include at least two ways that a recruiter can get in contact with you just in case one of them doesnt work.3. Personal summaryC hances are, you dont have a lot of experience when writing your first job resume. This is okay but you need to find a way to tell the recruiter more about you. A personal summary can be used to explain who you are and what you hope to accomplish from the role. Typically, 2-3 sentences just below your contact details is enough. It doesnt have to take the form of a paragraph. You can use a Personal Philosophy Section or Most Proud Of (see additional sections) section to convey more details.4. Skills SectionIn one form of another, youll have to mention your specific skills on your resume. This is to show the employer what youre capable of and what youll bring to your role should you be hired.Some skills that you can mention in your first job resume (with working experience) are Customer relations (solving customer issues)End of day processing (closing shop)Data processing (inputting stock on excel)Transaction maintenance (working on a checkout)Inventory control (managing stock)Some sk ills you can mention in your first job resume (without working experience) are Proficiency in Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint) Conflict resolution (youre able to find compromise)Human relations (communication)Innovative problem solving (you can find creative ways to solve problems)Time management (you can get things done on a deadline)Just be sure to give examples that show that you have these skills whenever possible,5. Previous experience (exc. previous work experience)Your previous experience is a great way to show the recruiter that you can apply all of your skills to the real-world. Employers want to see youre capable of making a difference in their organisation and that youll be an important piece of the puzzle in achieving success. Before you skim over this section and think you dont have any previous experience, it doesnt have to be in a working environment. If youve spent time volunteering, babysitting, coaching, leading people at Summer Camp, taking on ex tra-curricular activities at school, all of these things are previous experience. The important part of describing your previous experience is to go in-depth about what you accomplished more than what you were responsible for. See an example below for a Library Assistant and Equipment Manager. Make sure everything you mention is measured when possible.6. References References or Referees are people you include on your resume that will be able to speak about you. There are two types character references and professional references. Character Reference A character reference is used when you do not have any professional experience (working in a job). Traditionally, you should include two character references that can speak to your abilities and who you are as a person. These should not be family members if you can avoid it. Ask one of your teachers, coaches and so on. You should include their name, email and phone number. Make sure to ask your referee (the person you include as referen ce) for their permission to do this and notify them when you are applying for jobs.Professional Reference Professional references are those from people that you have worked with / for previously. Usually, this will be your supervisor or manager. As with character references, youll need to include contact details and name. Again, be sure to ask their permission to include this. Additional sections There are some more sections that you can include on your first job resume depending on your personal preferences. These sections are more about showing your personality and interest and arent needed exactly, but they can help you stand out from the crowd. If you have little experience, these optional sections are a great way to show off your talents.1. Most Proud OfYour Most Proud Of Section gives insight into who you are as a person. It can be used to highlight some of your projects and personal achievements. This will help the potential employer understand how you fit in the companys cul ture and the team.2. Certifications Certifications show youre willing to dedicate time to learning new skills. Being certified in First-Aid, Manual Lifting, Microsoft Excel and more are great to include on a CV as they show youre proactive in your work.3. PassionsPassions are a way to quickly emphasise things that matter most to you. These can be personal causes or more business-focused. Some examples of personal passions areMusic Production Carpentry Choir Kayaking Hiking Water polo Fighting homelessness Some examples of business-focused passions areImproving efficiencyGrowth and improvement Diversity Inclusion Collaboration Team-work4. AwardsAwards are the pinnacle of a measured achievement. Including awards shows the employer that external parties have recognised your ability and rewarded it in the past. If youre still in high-school, high-school awards such as Student of The Year are appropriate. As you enter college, you should try include awards and achievements from college instead.5. Photo For some industries, a photo is an excellent way of personalising your resume and adding a human touch. However, in some countries its forbidden or frowned upon to include a photograph. So, double check. This can be as simple as emailing the HR department to ask or ask your guidance counselor for some help with this. Sample First Job ResumeReviewing Your Resume After completing your resume, reviewing your content is the last step you should take before sending it out to recruiters.1. Have you read the job description?The job description is typically posted alongside any job listing. It will give details on what the job will entail and the duties youll be given. Reading the job description will help tailor your resume to answer the question the recruiter will ask. For example, if the job description mentions accounting, youll know to include your math skills.Not all parts of the job description need to be satisfied, however. Meet as many expectations as possible. If it mentions experience with customers this doesnt have to be direct experience working in customer service. It can be selling hot dogs at your local football game. 2. How is your resume different?Looking at your resume, you should spot things that make it unique. Remember, you need to stand out from the pool of people that are applying for the same job you are. Including personalised sections (Most Proud Of etc.,) tells your unique story and typically satisfies this idea.3. Are your achievements measured?Look over achievements to see if they are all measured. Again, listing responsibilities will only do so much. Providing a measure shows the recruiter what impact you have made in the past and gives insight into the potential impact youll have in the future. 4. Have you checked for typos?Typos are very common in resumes. Everything else may be perfect, but if theres a typographical error (spelling mistake, grammar mistakes, and so on) it will dampen the good impression youre trying t o leave on the recruiter. You can utilise s content analyzer to spot common typos. 5. Has a friend reviewed your resume?Getting a fresh pair-of-eyes to look at your resume will do wonders. Not only will it give you an idea of how you resume comes across to a neutral party, but they may also find mistakes that youve missed. They may even think of some achievement you forgot to include. Luckily, s built-in referral link allows you to do this with ease. Frequently Asked Questions 1. How long should my first resume be?For your first resume, you should aim to keep your resume between 1-2 pages (1 is preferrable). Extremely long resumes are often filled with fluff and arent tailored to one particular job.2. What font should I use?Font restrictions are not very common, but check out the job description / application guidelines just in case. In general, use a readable font with clean edges. Arial, Times New Roman, Rubik and so on. 3. How many resumes should I have?A good rule-of-thumb is to have a resume for every sector or industry youre applying to. For example, a sales resume and a volunteer resume. For jobs that you really care about, you might even tailor your resume to that specific company.4. What needs to be on my first resume?Essential sections include Name Contact Details (Phone Number Email)Skills Previous experience (not necessarily in the working world) Additional sections include PassionsMost Proud OfAwardsAchievements Personal Summary (important for your first resume) PhotoCertifications5. Where can I find first resume examples?You can find real examples of people that have been successful with their resumes here. Deans story about what makes his first resume effective may interest you. Writing your first job resume Writing your first job resume can be difficult, but its manageable. Can Credit Score Affect Employment and Will Bad Credit Hurt Your Job Chances

Can Credit Score Affect Employment and Will Bad Credit Hurt Your Job Chances Can Credit Score Affect Employment and Will Bad Credit Hurt Your Job Chances Will Bad Credit Hurt Your Job Chances?Tight times can blemish credit reports. How do background checks affect hiring decisions?Worried that recent economic travails have blemished your credit report? That those mortgage payments that went out a few days late might catch up with you? Or the cable bill you let slide for an entire month might come up in a background check and keep you from landing the job you really want?Take heart: Your credit score is rarely used to disqualify job seekers for most positions, and there are steps you can take to minimize any damage an employer might find, recruiters and credit experts told Ladders. To protect yourself, it’s helpful to know what your credit report can and cannot tell potential employees about you.Many hiring companies use credit reports to glean the most accurate identifying details for a candidate, including his full name and previous addresses. In general, though, research rarely goes further, said Kevin Connell, founder and CEO of A ccuScreen, a firm that performs pre-employment screenings for hiring companies in retail, healthcare, technology and banking.One exception: Most companies will run a full credit report on any candidate who would have access to the company’s finances. “For candidates that would have financial oversight responsibilities, credit checks are even more important,” Connell said. A consistent pattern of living beyond your means and/or a high debt ratio could be a red flag to recruiters and employers that you’re not the right fit.In addition, a complete credit report becomes more common for the C-level executives, said Jill Knittel, principle of ER Associates, an executive-search firm based in Rochester, N.Y. At least half of her clients request a credit report at the C-level, she said.“Clients want to have the foresight into someone’s financial mind,” Knittel said. “Seeing how [you] run the ‘business of life’ can identify and mitigate employers’ risk for embezzlement a nd/or fraud.”In these cases, most companies will also ask for two to three years of tax returns to demonstrate a candidate’s income and ability to live within their means.But given the current economic climate, the duration of unemployment faced by many and the state of credit markets,, most employers have grown more accepting of blemishes on a candidate’s credit, Connell said. They know that otherwise solid, even exemplary, candidates could fall victim to layoffs, missed bill and mortgage payments and even bankruptcy, resulting in a poor credit score. “In my opinion, I believe that candidates whose reports show credit issues from the end of 2008 are going to be given the benefit of the doubt for the next couple years.”Knittel said she hasn’t seen evidence that poor credit is affecting candidates who come to her firm seeking employment.“In the higher-level positions, the only thing I’ve seen is that candidates might not be paying off entire balances of debt, but they are keeping up with their minimum payments,” she said.The bottom line: A few blemishes on your credit record are unlikely to exclude you from consideration by recruiters and hiring managers, as long as you’re prepared to explain and verify information..bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-group-1012255-lyDBLV9 {width: 900px;height: 550px;}

How to Write a Project Management Plan

How to Write a Project Management Plan How to Write a Project Management Plan A project management plan is a document that sets out how the team will work on the project. It describes the project lifecycle and covers how the work will be executed, monitored, controlled and then formally closed. The project management plan is actually a generic term for all the sub-plans that you’ll be producing for the project. We can define the project management plan as everything that is covered in these plans: Requirements management planScope management planSchedule management planQuality management plan, if you have oneCost management planRisk management plan (which should reference your  risk log)Change management planProcurement management plan, if you need one for the projectConfiguration management plan, again, only if you plan to write one: you might not feel that it is necessary for your projectHuman resource management plan The project management plan also includes important information about the project’s baselines, especially for scope and schedule. This gives you a line in the sand that you can refer back to so that you can easily see what has changed when you finally close the project and compare planned to actual performance. Having said that, the project management plan does exist as a document in its own right. Here’s what to include and how to reference those other sections. Writing the Project Management Plan Document Start your document with the name of the project and the date. Use a template from your Project Management Office if you have one, to save having to start from scratch. Then include these sections: Thresholds and Baselines: Spell out how the baselines will be managed for the schedule, scope, cost and quality areas of the project. Set out what the acceptable variances to plan will be (for example, /-10 percent) and what you’ll do if it looks like those will be breached. You may have already documented these in your Project Charter. Governance: Set out what project reviews, peer reviews and other governance measures you will apply as you go through the project management lifecycle. As a minimum, you should include the formal sign off at the end of each phase. This is one of the roles of the project sponsor. You can also put in details of the quality reviews that you’ll hold if that’s appropriate for your project. Methodology Decisions: This is a good place to write down which bits of your project management methodology you have decided not to do because it is not relevant. For example, you can note here that you are not going to do a procurement management plan because there is no procurement required for your project. Anything Else: Don’t be limited to these headings. Include anything else that you think might be relevant to the planning of the project such as linkages to other projects in the company, external factors that may affect planning that you want to bring to someone’s attention and so on. The Subsidiary Plans If you merge all your project documents into one it will be a huge project management plan. It’s best to include links (or at least a description of where the document can be found) in this document. Then if someone wants to go and read it, they can find it, without having your project management plan become so overwhelmingly long that no one looks at it at all. Don’t forget to link to the baselines as well. For the project schedule baseline, save a version of your plan and link to that. For the cost baseline, save a version of your budget planning as of today and link to that. These documents are living documents and will change as the project moves on, but you’ll keep those original files so that you can look back on them and do the comparison. Finally, add version control to your project management plan so that if you do need to update it you will easily be able to see if you are working on the latest copy.

Lie Detector Tests for Employment

Lie Detector Tests for Employment Lie Detector Tests for Employment When can an employer ask an employee or a candidate for employment to take a lie detector test? The Employee Polygraph Protection Act (EPPA) from 1988 is a federal law that prohibits most private employers from giving lie detector tests to employees, whether the use is for  pre-employment screening  or during the course of employment.  Employers generally cannot even request that an employee take a lie detector test, let alone require it. The law, however, does not apply to people working in federal, state, and local government agencies. There are other exceptions as well. Read below for more information about EPPA, including exceptions to the law, and what your rights are as an employee if you are asked to take a lie detector test. When Employers Can Require a Lie Detector Test Employers generally may not require or request a job applicant or employee to take a lie detector test, or discharge, discipline, or discriminate against an employee or job applicant for refusing to take a lie detector test. Employers are also legally unable to request results from a lie detector test. This is the case for most private employers. However, there are exceptions to EPPA. For example, security firms (such as alarm companies) and pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors, and dispensaries  do not fall under this law. They are allowed to use lie detector tests on employees, although there are restrictions surrounding how they can use the tests. As mentioned above, federal, state, and local government agencies  also do not have to follow the rules of EPPA. However, again, they face regulations if they give lie detector tests to employees. One other exception is that employers of certain private firms can give polygraph tests to certain employees if they are reasonably suspected of involvement in a workplace incident, such as theft or embezzlement, as long as it resulted in specific economic loss or injury to the employer. However, this use of a polygraph test is also under certain restrictions. For example, the employer has to fully explain to the employee in writing the activity they are investigating. Rights of the Employee EPPA states that employees are legally entitled to employment at most companies without the expectation of having to take a lie detector test. For those companies that are allowed to do tests, there are strict provisions before, during, and after the test. For example, employees have to be told ahead of time about the test, and certain information has to be recorded. The examiner also has to be licensed if this is required by the state in which the test takes place. If the employee lives in a state or local area that has even stricter rules related to lie detectors, his or her employee has to follow those stricter rules. Employees are also able to reach out if an employer or potential employer is violating any part of the act. They can bring civil action against the employer in federal or state court. However, they have to do this within three years of the violation. Legally Required Notice Before the lie detector test commences, the employee is legally entitled to basic information  surrounding the reason for the test. If it is because of a supposed offense, the employee must be told about the incident being investigated. This includes what happened, if there was any loss or injury in the situation, what was taken or missing, why the employee is thought to have been involved, etc. The employer is also required to give the employee a written  description of how the test will go, and an explicit list of the employee’s rights. He or she also must  provide plenty of time for the employee to seek independent counsel before the test. Where to Get More Information If you need more information on lie detector tests for employment, you can read more about EPPA on the United States Department of Labor website. You can also check out this fact sheet on EPPA. If you want specific information about lie detector regulations in your state, look up your local Wage and Hour Division (WHD) office. Other Types of Pre-Employment Tests Most other pre-employment tests are not restricted in the way that lie detector tests are. These tests range from physical ability tests to drug tests to personality tests. Most of these are legal and not heavily restricted. They are only illegal if the company uses the test to discriminate against applicants on the basis of age, race, color, sex, national origin, religion, or disability. Read here for more information on pre-employment tests other than lie detectors.

Tapping Retirees for Contingent Workforce Needs

Tapping Retirees for Contingent Workforce Needs Tapping Retirees for Contingent Workforce Needs Tapping Retirees for Contingent Workforce Needs Rossheim What do you do when your company is facing a high-level skills shortage, but you cant justify an expensive increase in headcount just to handle one project or a seasonal surge in business? The answer for more and more employers is to bring on contingent talent in the form of retired professionals an underutilized labor pool with vast business experience and institutional knowledge. We are seeing increasing demand for retired workers, says Chris Caldon, a senior vice president at Peoplefluent,a vendor of talent-management software. Organizations are struggling with key skills gaps, and given the economy, theyre hesitant to bring people back full-time. In the 2010s, theres an ample supply of retired business and technical talent that is open to taking a look at a term assignment. Many professionals have retired, but they still want to be engaged in the workforce, and maybe they need to be for financial reasons, says Karen Turner, a vice president of product development and strategyat staffing and HR services firm Randstad SourceRight. Whats different about retired talent when it comes to sourcing, recruiting, hiring and onboarding? Here are nine fundamentals. Dont lose touch when your veteran workers retire. Its a big mistake to let your most valued employees fall out of touch, just because theyre retiring. Continuing engagement with retirees and alumni gives you a labor pool to reach out to, says Caldon. Lead the way with alumni engagement and youll derive a competitive talent advantage. Companies havent thought out the engagement strategy really well, says Turner. They havent thought out plans to prepare for departures and connect with alumni and reengage them. Non-alumni retirees call for different sourcingtactics. The broader pool of retirees requires greater outreach than your own alumni. You need to go out where your particular retiree population is, through online networks, partner groups like AARP, and employee referrals, says Turner. Consider retirees for project-based work. Why bring on young and restless talent for a project that could be aced by a retiree whos looking for a satisfying, limited-time project, not a career? Many retirees are interested in working perhaps 40 or more hours per week on a project basis. In the life sciences, this could mean crunching data for clinical trials of a drug or medical device, for example. Older professionals can fill seasonal needs. Younger professionals may jump at a seasonal hiringopportunity with your organization and jump ship just as quickly if something longer-term comes along. Thats why seasonal gigs for retired white-collar professionals are a much easier talent-acquisition proposition many retirees arent looking for a full-time position anyway, says Caldon. Financial firms that do a lot of tax preparation may be able to hire retirees for the winter and early spring crunch, for example. Highlight the value of decades of experience. My Fortune 500 clients need someone whos up to date on technology but also knows legacy systems, says Erica Oliver, a recruiter for Aquent, which specializes in placing creative professionals in contingent hiring roles. Theres a huge value in bringing someone to the table who has seen the ups and downs of the economy, who understands that technologies come and go. You still need an effective match. Not every retiree likely an expert in her field can comfortably take direction from a manager whos probably younger. And not every manager has the knack for directing full-time and contingent colleagues who work side by side. As with a full-time hire, theres more to bringing on a contingent professional than just filling a seat with a skill set. Look for people who have mastered the art of the multigenerational workforce. Dont neglect onboarding.Similarly, a retired professionals work product isnt likely to be all that it could be if he isnt fully oriented to the projects role in furthering broader organizational goals. With a deeply experienced professional, a little orientation should go a long way. Retirees may require flexibility.Retirees may think theyve earned the right to be a bit selfish about working a schedule that suits them personally. Wise managers will make an up or down decision about whether that arrangement will work for the organization; they wont try to pressure retirees into accepting conditions they dislike. Retirees may want to stick to a 4-day week or other nontraditional arrangement, say Caldon. That can be an issue. Beware legal and compliance issues.Yes, independent contractors and employees of third-party agencies generally come with fewer compliance worries than direct hires. But co-employment issues and disputes over the nature of the work arrangement can still arise. Employers are not as concerned as they should be with the regulatory compliance issues that come with contingent workers, says Caldon. Staying on top of all the federal and state requirements is a huge issue.

10 Things to Make Your Boss Really Unhappy

10 Things to Make Your Boss Really Unhappy 10 Things to Make Your Boss Really Unhappy Bosses are just humans, and like all humans, they are not perfect. This means that sometimes your boss drives you up the wall. If you want to get back at your boss and destroy your own career in the process (because in all honesty, even a bad boss is still your boss), try these ten things and see how fast you can make your boss angry. Make the Same Error Over and Over Again Everybody understands that there is a learning curve for every job. People also expect mistakes from time to time. But, if you really want to drive your boss up the wall, make the same mistake over and over and over again. Ignore your boss when she corrects you. Just keep making the same mistake and exhibit no commitment to fix your error. Whine About Your Peers Youre  probably smart enough not to whine about your boss to her face, but what about whining about your coworkers? Try this, “Jane gets the better projects.” and “Why do I have to do the closing shift? Why didnt you schedule John?” Also, a popular whine is, “Im the one who does all the work around here. Why dont you make Carol do some of it?” Spend Your Time on Your Phone Sure, you could be checking tiny spreadsheets on your iPhone, but its more likely that youre goofing off on the companys dime. Every time your boss sees you, make sure youre hunched over your phone, tapping away. Better yet, put your headphones in and snort to yourself as you watch funny YouTube videos. Volunteer for a Project, Then Screw  It Up There are plum assignments that everyone wants. Beg and plead to get one of these and then do it sloppily, or ignore deadlines, or push it off onto someone else. This will make your boss wonder why on earth you volunteered for the project. Dont expect to get another plum assignment any time soon- if ever. Once burned... Dont Respond on Time A lot of communication these days is electronic- whether its email, text message, or WhatsApp- conversations with your boss arent always face to face. This means you dont have to reply immediately like you would if you were in the same room. Try waiting 3 hours to respond to a simple question. For a more complex question, wait a couple of days or dont respond at all. Treat Your Customers Poorly While the customer is not always right, with no customers you have no job. The boss wants satisfied customers who come back repeatedly, so if you want to tick her off, make sure you offer lousy customer service. If a retail customer asks where an item is, dont show her, just wave your arm in a general direction. If a professional services client sends an email, ignore it. If your plumbing client calls in a panic with a flooding basement put her on hold and finish your game of Candy Crush. You need to make customers matter- because they matter. Be Defensive Make sure the attitude you express to your boss is that its never your fault. Theres always someone or something else to blame. The report had errors because Jane didnt have time to proofread it before you handed it in. The shipment was late because the internet was spotty that day and the order must not have gone through properly (even though records show you didnt do the work in a timely manner). Just keep repeating this mantra, “Its not my fault” over and over again. Be Unreliable Youre supposed to clock in by 8:00? Show up somewhere around 9:00. Take a long lunch without telling anyone youll be gone for two hours. Send a text message at 8:15 telling your boss you are feeling sick and wont make it in. Bonus points if you have a meeting scheduled that morning.  These things drive bosses crazy. Be a Slob Leaving around slightly moldy bowls definitely indicates something bad. How can your boss trust you to pay attention to detail in your job if you cant bother to clean up the used tissues on your desk? How about the triangular stack of pop cans that never seems to disappear? Your boss makes decisions about you based on appearances, for sure. Ignore Specific Instructions Your boss says, “Please do A and then B, and if you have time, do C,” so what you should do, of course, is start with C. If your boss says, “Please use the company standard templates,” then design your own. You may be right, that your ideas are better, but your boss will not be pleased with your efforts. Youll have to redo the work, and your boss will be angry. If, instead,  youd like to make your boss happy, and improve your career, do the opposite of everything listed here. Your life will be much better with a happy boss. How to Have an Interesting Conversation at Work

How to Have an Interesting Conversation at Work How to Have an Interesting Conversation at Work Knowing how to have an interesting conversation is a great way to demonstrate communication skills. If you want to have more than just “some conversation”, check these tips below. It will help you avoid those conversations we feel are “cringe-worthy” and also help you be a better networker. After all, people may not remember exactly what you said but they will remember how you made them feel. Show genuine interest in the person Asking simple questions like, “How did you do that?”, can go a long way. Let people explain to you why they are geniuses and you will see how to have an interesting conversation. Asking questions to keep the conversation going can become some of the best conversations to have. Keep the conversation positive Have you ever met a person who thinks the way to have an interesting conversation is to bring up the negative side of everything? An old Saturday Night Live skit referred to this as being a “Debbie Downer”. After hearing the best news ever, the Debbie Downer contributes with negative opinions to completely deflate the great news. No one needs to know the negative side to everything. Unless they specifically ask, “What can go wrong with this?”, keep the negative comments for your own imagination. Try not to dominate the conversation When you are meeting a new group of people, demonstrate communication skills by finding out more about THEM. A common mistake people make when starting a new job is that they are so eager to impress, they never stop talking about themselves. Give the staff time to find out what you can do without lengthy monologues about your life. All good things come in good time. Look for key points to contribute to conversations or start them when you feel the time is right. If you sense you are overwhelming people, back off the conversation and let it end. Stick to safe topics Stay away from topics involving politics, religion, and personal habits. No one at work needs to know who you worship, voted for in the last election, or how many times a week you wash your hair. In recent years with social media and the current political climate, such topics almost seem to come up by accident. Unfortunately, unsafe topics may also lead to animosity in the workplace. Demonstrate communication skills by sticking to safe topics. This way, you are respecting people’s beliefs by never talking about them. Have a conversation, not a comparison-conversation Some conversations fall into the trap of becoming a comparison-conversation. For example, a colleague comes in explaining her happiness with her child’s recent academic accomplishment. You may want to discuss your child’s success as a way of being relatable or adding to the conversation. But if you do this, the colleague may look at you, as if you are stealing her thunder ie. Comparing achievements. Demonstrate communication skills by letting the colleague brag and respond only with positive statements of support and congratulations. Give people the stage when they want it. Knowing how to have an interesting conversation often begins with understanding give and take. When you are giving, your attitude is more like, “There you are!” When you are taking, it is more like, “Here I am!”. Embrace what you are hearing without judging it Eye contact and simply listening can help you have an interesting conversation. For those who work with customers in the general public, this comes up often. Sometimes people just want to talk without being challenged or judged. If someone is ranting about something they did, and you disagree with it, do not offer a judgment statement like, “It sounds like you should have done this instead.” Not only is that behavior obnoxious, it also shows you care more about hearing your own voice. Be yourself Sometimes someone just wants to talk, and for some reason, you cannot deal with it. Believe it or not, people will be more likely to talk to you again in the future if they feel you care only about how to have an interesting conversation. If the conversation is one that makes you uncomfortable, and you do not want to be a part of it, you are showing character by politely excusing yourself. You also demonstrate communication skills by excusing yourself without being rude. A simple, “My apologies. You caught me in the middle of something. I have to run.” is a polite way of stepping away from an uncomfortable conversation. The problem with staying in too many conversations you disagree with is that eventually, you will attract people who love to talk about things you take issue with. The worst feeling is to get caught in a conversation about something rude or offensive, and then being associated with that conversation. You did nothing to let that person know, “This conversation makes me uncomfortable”. Above all, being yourself is key to building the right network for yourself! Start Your First Job in Accounting With Confidence

Start Your First Job in Accounting With Confidence Start Your First Job in Accounting With Confidence If you’re an accounting student, you might find yourself looking forward to the day you graduate and go out into the working world, leaving the classroom behind for a real job and a good paycheck. But are you really ready? Maybe not. In a new survey from Accountemps and Enactus, 42 percent of the students polled said what they worry most about starting work is that they chose the wrong job and are missing out on something else. For 39 percent, what gives them the most jitters is the fear they won’t learn quickly enough and will make mistakes in their first job out of college. The good news? There’s an ongoing demand for talented accounting professionals, and even as a student, there are plenty of ways to prepare yourself for life outside the classroom. Keep in mind that practical experience is sometimes the only way to gain certain types of skills and expertise. Follow these four steps to get a taste of the working world, and you’ll likely feel more prepared when you start your first job: 1. Get involved in campus organizations When you join a university group, you’ll work with like-minded students to put together forums, meetings, networking events and volunteer opportunities, to name just a few things. The experience will help you develop soft skills like communication, collaboration and negotiation, all of which will help you on the job. If you take on a leadership role in the organization, you’ll get even more: practice at managing people and making tough decisions, for example. 2. Apply for internships Ask your professors and the advisors in your school’s career center if they can recommend good accounting internships. There’s no better way to get a sense of what it’s like to work in an office. You’ll get experience not only in working with the tools and technology used in the accounting and finance industry, but also in navigating office politics. 3. Take temporary work If you’re working to put yourself through school and don’t have the time to take on an unpaid internship, consider signing up with a staffing firm. These agencies often have temporary accounting assignments that are appropriate for students, which means that you can obtain that important on-the-job work experience while earning an income. You can also think of it as a trial run - a way to gain insight on what position, industry or size of company is right for you. Find out more about the temporary finance and accounting positions Accountemps specializes in placing. 4. Use your skills in a volunteer capacity There are plenty of local non-profit and charity organizations in every college town that need accounting help. Call one that aligns with your beliefs and passions, and offer to help with the bookkeeping. Because many of these organizations are small, you’ll likely get to see how the whole operation works, which can be useful down the line when you work with departments outside of accounting and finance. One final piece of advice: Get to know your professors, and keep in touch with them even after you graduate. If you run up against an issue in your first job and don’t know how to solve it, you can call them and ask them what they’d do. Many times, they’ll have valuable insights and would jump at the chance to impart one more lesson to a former student.
